British Gas comes bottom of league for customers
A recent survey carried out by price comparison website uswitch.com has shown that energy giant British Gas continues to be the least popular energy supplier with consumers for the second year in a row. Voted worst supplier for the second consecutive year, British Gas has been flooded with complaints recently about its customer service and its billing system. The energy giant did have eleven percent more satisfied customers compared to last year, but still came in at the bottom of the league tables.
British Gas was the first of the major energy suppliers to cut its costs, which led to a price war that saw other energy suppliers cutting their costs after the price of wholesale energy fell. This in turn led to a huge number of households deciding to switch suppliers in order to get better prices and improved customer service. As a result of its bottom of the league position British Gas has stated that various improvements will be made to its service.
A uswitch official stated that energy suppliers in general have seen increasing dissatisfaction, particularly in terms of cost. She stated: 'Customers realise that although prices are coming down they are not coming down fast enough. Wholesale prices are now at or below the levels of 2005, but household bills are still around £200 above the levels they were in 2005. People don't feel they're getting a good enough deal.'
Around twenty percent more people are switching now compared to this time last year, and it is estimated that around six hundred thousand people changed their supplier in the first two months of this year alone. Top of the league of energy suppliers in the survey was Scottish and Southern Energy, and second and third places were taken by EDF Energy and Powergen. Scottish Power came in at fourth on the league, and Powergen pipped British Gas to the post with fifth place.
