DIY disasters could cost you a fortune without the right cover

Every year many people in the UK carry out a range of DIY jobs in the home, and this is in a bid to make the home more comfortable and practical as well as to improve the value of the home. However, not everyone is a DIY expert, and industry professionals have warned that without the appropriate level of life insurance cover DIY enthusiasts could end up paying through the nose if anything goes wrong.

According to figures from a leading insurance company in the UK in the last twelve months around twenty percent of those carrying out DIY in the home have caused damage to the building or the contents, which can end up costing a fortune depending on the type and severity of the damage caused. Of this figure around fifty percent had caused damage more than once to their home whilst carrying out DIY work, and the other fifty percent just once.

Paint spillages, broken furniture, broken ornaments, damaged electrical and water pipes, and upholstery damage are amongst the most common problems when it comes to damage. One spokesperson from Churchill Insurance office stated: 'Householders who have elected to include accidental damage cover under their home insurance policy have the added reassurance that they are covered if a DIY accident causes damage in the home.'

The average cost of the damage that stems from a DIY disaster in the home is around £550, and this means that a small accident can cost a fortune unless you have the right level of cover. Consumers are urged to check their home and content cover, and to ensure that they have cover for accidental damage, as otherwise they could end up paying a fortune in situations such as this.
