British Gas goes green

In a bid to try and win back custom, one of the UK's leading energy suppliers, British Gas, has decided to go green by offering environmentally conscious and thrifty customer the chance to take up their 'new energy' service. British Gas New Energy will be aimed at those that want to help the environment as well as those that want to save money through generating and saving their own power.

As part of the New Energy scheme, British Gas intends to sell and install rooftop solar heating panels, with which consumers can heat their own water. Customers will also be able to offset their CO2 emissions via scheme that buy credits from firms and destinations that have exceeded their targets. British Gas has also come to an agreement with some local authorities, which means that some consumers taking up the New Energy scheme will be able to save up to £500 per year on their council tax bills.

The cost of the solar panels from British Gas start at around £4300. At present the scheme is available in certain places around the country, including Salford, Conwy, South Cambridgeshire, Runnymede, Braintree, and Taunton Deane. However, according to the energy supplier, more local authorities will be adopting the scheme as times goes on, making it more accessible and available to more consumers.

The Chief Executive of Centrica stated: 'Most UK homes are poorly insulated and the energy loss and emissions levels from them are much higher than they could be. We can use our expertise in the green energy sector to help home owners significantly reduce their impact on the environment and take a lead in this rapidly growing new business area.'

This will form one of a number of schemes available from British Gas, where consumers can save money on their council tax by, for instance, fitting insulation in their homes.
