Make sure you know what your travel insurance covers you for

Consumers in the UK are being urged to ensure that they check their travel insurance policies to make sure that they have adequate levels of cover to protect themselves and their loved ones. Every year millions of people in the UK purchase travel insurance, but all too often they simply take insurance through the operator through which they are booking their holiday, usually failing to see what is and isn't covered or checking the restrictions and exclusions. In some cases, this ends up costing the consumer dearly.

Some consumers in the UK have automatic travel insurance cover through their banks, such as those with upgraded bank accounts, but it is also important to check this cover before going on holiday and upgrading where necessary. It is important that consumers don't just assume that they are covered for everything, as this simply isn't the case. Those going on specialist holidays, such as winter sports and adventure holidays, should be particularly vigilant, as more comprehensive cover is required with this type of vacation, due to the increased risk of injury and also to protect relevant equipment. One spokesperson for Moneyextra said: "If you enjoy the adrenaline rush of winter sports, you should plan ahead and make sure your travel insurance is appropriate, covering you for the sports you intend to partake in and mountain evacuation."

The government has already announced a crackdown on travel insurance cover, as an investigation revealed that consumers were not covered for certain events on many policies, including terrorist attacks. However, it is also important for the consumer to check any travel insurance policy prior to departing on their holiday, ensuring that the policy provide adequate cover based on the type of holiday that they are going on.
