Internet banking fraud has shot up by eight thousand percent

According to recent reports that have been released in relation to the levels of Internet fraud hitting the UK, there has been a massive eight thousand percent rise in this type of fraudulent activity over the course of just two years. With an increasing number of banks offering online facilities over recent years, the level of Internet banking fraud was naturally going to increase, but many are shocked at just how much it has increased and over a relatively short period.

Consumer confidence in relation to Internet banking seems to be quite healthy according to figures from recent surveys, and the latter part of last year saw Internet banking overtake telephone banking for the first time in terms of user popularity. However, experts are concerned that without being properly educated in terms of Internet banking safety and precautions, and increasing number of people could find themselves falling victim to this type of fraud, as use of Internet banking facilities rise.

Phishing is one common form of Internet fraud, and this is where fraudsters send out fake emails and set up fake websites, through which they encourage users to provide banking and account details, which is then used to carry out the fraudulent activity. Users are warned never to link to the bank’s website via an email link, and also never to provide account information in response to an email.
