Energy wasting could be pushing cost of own bills
A recent survey carried out into energy usage in Europe has shown that Brits are the worst offenders when it comes to wasting energy, and this could be contributing to the extortionate bills that many UK households are having to deal with. Although gas and electricity prices have soared over the past year, adding to the amount that households are having to pay for their energy usage, many British households are adding to the problem by wasting energy and pushing their own bills up even higher. Taking some simple steps could help Brits to cut their energy bills quite dramatically.
The survey involved evaluating the energy usage of around five thousand people throughout Europe, and from the sample that was evaluated Britain came out worst. The Germans were the most efficient energy users according to the survey results, and the Spanish were the second best at utilizing their energy effectively without wastage.
Amongst the bad habits that were identified amongst Brits was keeping everything on standby, such as the computer and television, rather than switching off altogether. According to data, leaving appliances on standby rather than switching them off could save the average household nearly forty pounds a year. Many are also guilty of leaving lights switched on even when they are not in the room – or sometimes even in the house, with over sixty percent of Brits admitting to doing this. However, on the upside nearly eighty percent of Brits claimed that they usually put on an extra jumper when it got cold rather than turning the heating up.
The Energy Savings Trust has stated that if this trend continues and the Brits continue to waste energy in this way, around eleven billion pounds and over forty million tonnes of carbon dioxide could be wasted by 2010.
