Job losses announced at Barclays

Officials from Barclays Bank recently announced that there would be job losses at its credit card division, as the bank moves to streamline processes and cut costs. Officials said that the decision was not an easy one, but with the effects of the credit crunch and the losses that banks were experiencing, job losses were unavoidable.

Bank officials have stated that around 160 jobs will be lost in total, and this comes as a result of the card production and statement mailing division of Barclaycard, which is currently based in Northampton, being closed, with the work being moved to other locations across the country.

According to recent reports card production will now be moved to another site in the Hampshire area, whilst other processes that were originally dealt with at the Northampton site will be moved to different parts of the UK including Gloucestershire, Leicester, and Milton Keynes.

The 160 people whose jobs will be affected are receiving support from management at the bank. All of those affected by the moves have been told by officials about the move and how their role has been affected by the decision. It is thought that the Northampton operation will continue running until the end of the year, and staff members will remain in place until that time. After this they will be given three months full pay, giving them time to find alternative employment.

One official from Barclays Bank stated: “Decisions like these are never easy and we will do everything we can to support our colleagues affected by this change. Barclaycard operates in an extremely competitive industry and we are looking to build a global credit card business”
