According to recent reports another two energy firms raised their gas and electricity prices near the end of August, hitting customers with a second round of price hikes this year, and adding strain to already overstretched household finances. Both E.On and Scottish and Southern Energy have recently announce that they are hiking up the cost of energy usage, so customers can once again expect to see their energy usage bills go up.

The increases that have been applied are quite sizeable, with E.On adding 26% to its gas usage costs and 16% to its electricity usage costs. Scottish and Southern has added 29.2% to its gas usage costs and 19.2% on its electricity usage costs. As with other energy suppliers the two firms have stated that they have been forced to put up energy prices as a result of increased costs in the wholesale energy market.

Dual fuel customers with Scottish and Southern will now see their annual household energy bills rise by an average £250. For E.On dual duel customers the average annual rise will be only slightly less, at an average £230. An official from E.On stated that the energy firm understood the financial strains facing households, and had tried to keep the rises as low as possible.

He said: “I’m very aware of the effect that today’s announcement will have on our customers and I recognise that this is a very tough time for everyone.”

A senior official from Scottish and Southern Energy said: “The world is experiencing an energy shock of a kind not seen since the early 1970s. Energy suppliers have to take steps towards covering their costs and I am sorry that we cannot delay these price rises any longer.”
