More consumers switching energy suppliers

According to recent reports from the energy regulator Ofgem an increasing number of people in the UK are now switching energy suppliers in a bid to enjoy better service and lower prices. According to the industry regulator the first seven months of this year saw around 2.8 million consumers switching their electricity supplier and around 2.3 million consumers switching their gas supplier. However, Ofgem also stated that there are many other consumers that are failing to switch and are therefore missing out on big savings.

During the same period last year 2.6 million consumers changed electricity suppliers and around 2.2 million consumers switched gas suppliers, which shows that there has been an increase in the number of consumers switching suppliers over the past year. Experts state that the savings that can be made by switching suppliers as well as by paying by direct debit can really mount up over the course of the year. With energy suppliers having cut their prices earlier this year following a drop in the cost of wholesale energy, consumers have been able to save a packet on the cost of their energy usage.

Experts are also stating that with winter on its way and households expected to increase their gas and electricity usage due to darker and colder conditions consumers should now start looking around for better deals. One official stated: “With 2.8 million households switching in the first half of the year, the heat is still on suppliers to offer customers the best deal for their energy. With winter drawing in and all suppliers having lowered their prices, now is a good time for all customers to check whether they are getting a good deal for their energy.”
