Officials are warning drivers with no insurance to watch out for increased scrutiny and penalties from authorities in the UK. According to a recent report police authorities across the UK are getting increasingly tougher on drivers that do not have insurance cover on their vehicle, and many could end up losing their vehicles to the crusher if they are caught and are unable to pay the hefty fines and penalties that will be imposed on those without cover.

According to a recent report many injuries and deaths are caused by uninsured drivers every year, and claims for these have to be covered through the Motor Insurers’ Bureau. The funding for payments of these claims comes from higher charges to honest drivers that do have cover, as premiums are around £30 higher than they should be simply because of those driving around with no insurance cover.

Police authorities have always had the authority to seize vehicles that are not insured, but in the past identifying vehicles being driven without cover has been more difficult. However, officials from the police state that they have developed a far closer working relationship with MIB and other authorities, and this enables them to quickly identify vehicles that are being driven without cover. Officers have also stated that catching an uninsured driver can often lead to discovery of other crimes, stating: ‘Uninsured driving is a good marker for other criminality. Questions about insurance quickly lead elsewhere.’

An MIB spokesperson stated: ‘Six points, a £300-£400 bill, plus the inconvenience of being without a car and the cost of buying new insurance adds up into a more meaningful punishment.’
