Take care of your wireless broadband connection

Officials have stated that many consumers in the UK that have wireless broadband connections could end up paying for a services that is simply not up to scratch – not because of the service provider but because their wireless connection is being used by others, posing a number of problems including compromised service and speeds. Authorities have warned that those with wireless broadband connections could also be at risk of real problems if those stealing the connection – typically done by using laptops outside the homes of those with wireless broadband – use their connection to perform illegal or dodgy activities.

Of course another concern is that the owner of the wireless connection is paying for the service yet the quality of their broadband connection and speed is being compromised because someone is illegally stealing their connection from outside their home. The warnings come after a man was recently arrested over stealing wireless broadband from outside someone’s home. Police have warned that this can be easily done if those with wireless connections do not take the necessary steps to protect their wireless broadband.

There have been other arrest made this year in connection to the theft of wireless broadband, and following two other recent arrests one police officer stated: “We want people to be aware that this is possible and to be vigilant themselves regarding their own broadband connections. Wireless networks don’t stop at the walls of your home - and so without the necessary protection, your neighbours or people in the road outside may be able to connect to your network. This might slow down your internet service, or more importantly, your internet connection could be used for unlawful purposes.”
