Dual fuel not necessarily the best option
April 1, 2008
In the past many consumers in the UK have taken both their gas and electricity from the same suppliers, and this is because this was often the cheapest option, with many energy giants offering big discounts to consumers that take both gas and electricity from them, known as dual fuel. However, according to recent reports from price comparison services this may no longer be the cheapest option for consumers, and many consumers may find that going through different suppliers for gas and electricity is the most cost effective option.
According to one price comparison website consumers can often save far more by going to low cost deals on their gas and electricity with separate suppliers where necessary, and that these savings can often prove far better in terms of cutting costs than any discounts that are offered by energy companies for taking out dual fuel deals. Although the difference in price is unlikely to be huge – equating to around £20 a year – officials state that it still rips to shreds the myth that it will always be cheaper to take your gas and electricity from the same supplier.
One official from the price comparison website stated: ‘It has been a common misconception that dual fuel is generally cheaper than taking out two separate deals. But our research shows the tables have turned and now Brits everywhere other than South Wales can save money by separating their energy providers.’
However, although it is evident that dual fuel may not be the cheapest option available for consumers, many will continue simply because it means dealing with just one supplier, which could reduce the hassle involved when problems arise and when trying to contact the energy supplier.
