Water bills could rise by up to 9%
March 2, 2008
According to a recent report water companies will be able to increase the cost of water bills by up to 9% next month, with the average customer likely to see their bills rise by around 5.8%. This means that the average household will see bills rise by an annual £18 a year to around £330 from April. Customers of some water companies across England and Wales, such as Yorkshire Water and United Utilities, will see their bills rise by an above average rise of 7.5%.
There will be another above average rise for customers of Southern Water and Wessex Water, who will see their water bills rise by 7.8%. The biggest blow is for customers of Dee Valley Water, which plans to increase bills by a whopping 9.4%. Thames Water, on the other hand, will be increasing prices by a below average amount, with customers paying an extra 3.8% on their water bills.
An official from the water regulator, Ofwat, stated: ‘With household bills generally going up - including increases in energy and council tax - we are aware that bill increases are difficult for some customers. These price rises are essential to enable companies to continue to provide high-quality secure water and sewerage services both now and for future generations. The increases also go towards significant improvements to protect the environment.’
Customer that are hit with the larger rises are likely to see additional strain on households finances, with other rising costs such as energy and food already impacting on their financial well being. Although interest rates have fallen twice since December, other costs such as petrol and energy usage have been rising.
