At the start of this year the major suppliers all announced pretty hefty energy usage price hikes, yet a number of them have also reported soaring profits for last year, which has angered campaigners and consumers.

A spokesperson for the regulator stated: “The decision to conduct the probe is in response to public concern about whether the market is working effectively. We are concerned about the increased volatility of wholesale prices and we want to investigate how European and other global energy market developments are affecting energy bills in Britain.”

Officials from Energywatch, the energy watchdog, said that they were pleased that the investigation was being conducted – Ofgem had previously refused to conduct any investigation into the matter according to reports.

One Energywatch official said: “Consumer concerns have demanded this sort of response. We hope it will shed light on how the energy market fails consumers and what can be done to fix it.” Another industry professional stated: “The impact of prices on vulnerable consumers is of real concern, and it’s vital that all consumers have access to competitive markets.”

The energy suppliers have blamed the price hikes on increased wholesale energy costs, but with all of them hiking up their prices by a significant amount it has become difficult for consumers to find cheaper suppliers, and many will be pushed into fuel poverty.

However, officials from Centrica, which owns British Gas, stated: “There have been 15 inquiries into the energy market in the last seven years and each of them has given the industry a clean bill of health.”
