New billing system from Thames Water

A new billing system has been brought in by Thames Water, which will see customers paying for water based on the size of the property that they live in. Under the new system the cost of water bills will be determined by the size of the home, and this will affect thousands of water customers that are not on water meters. The new billing system will only affect those that had requested water systems but were unable to have one fitted for practical reasons.

The move is likely to benefit those living in smaller properties, who will probably see their water bills come down, but could mean higher bills for those in larger properties. Officials from Thames Water have stated that logic dictates people in smaller properties and with fewer people in the home will use less water than those in larger properties and more people in the household. They added that the new billing system will mean that bill amounts will reflect the true amount of water being used in the home.

A spokesperson for the Consumer Council for Water stated: “Clearly people living in smaller flats are likely to have comparatively small usage. If they can’t have a meter fitted it’s only right that set charges should reflect that.” Water companies are currently in the process of having their proposed water increases assessed by the UK regulator Ofwat, and prices should be announced in the coming weeks.

It is thought that under the new billing system around 24,000 smaller homes will see bills fall by up to £45 a year, and thousands of larger homes could see their bills rise by over £20 a year.
