Man receives gas bill for £11 million

A landlord from Dorset in the UK was shocked recently after he received a gas bill from British Gas – asking for £11 million. The man, Denis Dixon, owns just a two bedroom rental flat in Dorset, and realized that the bill was, of course, a mistake. However, he said he was stunned to have received the bill, particularly considering that he had already settled his £500 quarterly bill.

Mr Dixon stated: ‘When I phoned British Gas and told the woman at the other end I was going to have difficulty paying my gas bill, she suggested we could come to some sort of an arrangement. She checked the bill and then just laughed, saying she could only apologise.’

A spokesman from British Gas apologized, stating: ‘Quite clearly, it has been a silly mistake and that bill should not have been sent out. We have apologised to him. We are looking into exactly what happened. It was due to human error. The meter had been changed and the wrong reading was taken - clearly it should have been spotted. We have spoken to Mr Dixon and agreed to make a £200 donation to the charity of his choice. That was at his request.’

Mr Dixon himself has also pledged to donate a further £200 to charity if anyone can prove that they have been billed for a higher amount than £11 million. This is the latest of many blunders by British Gas when it comes to billing, with a recent incident where the energy giant messed up on 45,000 direct debit payments. The number of complaints relating to billing by British Gas has also been steadily rising over recent months, with many complaints relating to over-charging and direct debits.
