Free laptop from Three
February 1, 2008
The broadband industry has become increasingly competitive over recent years, and as time as gone on broadband providers have had to offer increasingly sophisticated incentives in order to entice customers and stay a step ahead of the competition. In 2007 both AOL and Orange decided to offer free laptops with certain broadband contracts in order to get customers to sign up, and many decided to take up this offer.
According to recent reports Three has decided to take the same approach with its mobile broadband service, offering a free Dell Inspirion laptop. The scheme is being run through the Carphone Warehouse. There are, of course, terms and conditions. Customers will have to sign up to an 18 month Complete Mobile Broadband Package through the Carphone Warehouse in order to qualify. The service will cost £35 per month.
In addition to getting the laptop, customers will also receive 200 free texts per month and 3GB of data downloads. A similar deal is being offered by T-mobile, but customers will have to pay £199 for the laptop and sign up to a twenty four months contract, but for the cheaper monthly price of £20.
According to one broadband expert: “Mobile broadband is the next generation of wireless internet use. No longer constrained by ethernet cables around the home, you can now set yourself free from the phone line and take your broadband wherever you want to go.”
He also stated: “Although a free laptop with a broadband package is not a new concept a laptop with mobile broadband really does offer the ‘complete package’ - and bypasses BT line rental costs all together. However, despite widespread coverage, certain rural areas are patchy and customers should check their local coverage before committing to a long contract.”
