Broadband switching needs to be made easier
February 12, 2008
Experts have stated that switching broadband service is too complicated a process and needs to be made easier, in the same way that it is with energy suppliers. According to some experts many consumers have found that switching broadband provider is a complication process, and campaigners have called for broadband switching to become as simple as switching energy providers has become over recent years.
Industry experts are now urging the communications regulatory body Ofcom to treat broadband like any other utility, and to ensure that regulations are brought in to make the process of switching easier, more convenient, and more streamlined. Ofcom has already revised regulations to try and make it easier for those wishing to switch broadband providers, but many experts state that the whole process is still very time consuming and difficult.
With energy companies a central database is used in order to enable the customer to switch providers with ease and speed. However, with broadband a special code must be obtained by the customer, who must then oversee the whole switching process, which can involve long waits to be reconnected. This has put off many people who are unhappy with their broadband provider from switching providers, even though this is something they would like to do if the disruption was not going to be such an issue.
One industry professional stated: ‘At present, the broadband switching process is left up to the consumer. It’s the sole responsibility of the customer to oversee the switch – and this is affording providers more leeway to delay the process. Broadband has become a domestic utility – just like energy. Ofcom needs to apply the same logic to switching. Until then, broadband suppliers have the upper hand over consumers. The ability to switch supplier is excellent for competition and we welcome any move which makes it easier for the average internet user.’
