Experts repeat warnings over home insurance
January 4, 2008
Experts are once again urging consumers in the UK to check on their home insurance to ensure that their expensive Christmas gifts are adequately covered. At this time of year there are all sorts of expensive and luxurious goodies under trees in homes all across the UK, and this is something that thieves prey on at this time of year. Without the safety net of adequate cover you could end up losing your gifts and you may have to bear the financial consequences.
It has been estimated that around 20% of us will be leaving our homes empty over the festive season this year, as we head off to visit family and friends. This leaves our homes wide open to thieves who are keen to get their hands on all the expensive items that can be found under the tree. Although a break in at this time of year is still upsetting, making sure that your gifts are covered by your home insurance will at least enable you to claim back the value of the stolen items or get them replaced.
Another thing that consumers are being urged to remember is the increased risk of damage to expensive items at this time of year. With many of us entertaining and throwing parties there are more guests coming in and out of the house during the festive season, and this means that there is an increased risk of your belongings getting accidentally damaged. You therefore need to check that you are covered for accidental damage, as this does not always come as standard with a home insurance policy.
Some insurance companies do automatically raise cover levels for existing customers at this time of year, so check with your insurer as to whether this is the case. If not you will have to get the cover level raised to meet your needs.
