Debt advice campaign launched by Church of England

The Church of England is launching a campaign aimed at educating people to stay out of debt, and offering advice to those in debt. The campaign is called ‘A Matter of Life and Debt’ and aims to teach people not to buy what they cannot afford, or to offer practical and even biblical advice to those already in debt, with a view to increasing focus and understanding for those trying to get themselves out of the debt trap.

As part of the campaign the Church of England has produced a ten point check list that will enable consumers to see whether they are in danger of falling into serious debt, and help them to determine when they should take action.

One church official said: “If a household can say “yes” to any of the statements on the checklist, it may be on the verge of encountering serious debt issues, and should carefully consider taking some of the advice included in the pages of Matter of Life and Debt.”

He also added: “If a household can say “yes” to three or more of the warning signs it would be well advised to talk to a debt counselling service, such as the ones we link to online.”

As part of the campaign the Church of England’s campaign, which does have a biblical angle, will offer support, advice, guidance, practical tips, and more to those looking for help with debt. Experts have predicted that debt levels are likely to lead to around 130,000 becoming insolvent this year, and debt charities and agencies have already set themselves up for increase calls from worried borrowers over the first quarter of the year, as overspending during Christmas starts to take effect.
