Are you living a champagne lifestyle on beer money?

There comes a time in most people’s lives where they start spending over and above their means, and this is a habit that can quickly lead to serious financial problems and spiralling debt. In the current economic climate, and in light of the state of consumer debt levels in the UK, it has become increasingly important for consumers to ensure that they live within their means so that they can avoid financial problems and debt as much as possible.

Credit cards are one of the main culprits when it comes to living a champagne lifestyle on beer money, as these cards allow us to all too easily spend loads of money that we haven’t actually got and that doesn’t belong to us. When we are enjoying ourselves and splashing out we tend to brush the fact that the money has to be repaid under the carpet. It is only when the credit card bills start to arrive that we consider the consequences of our actions – something that many people that overspent this Christmas are now experiencing.

It is pretty easy to determine whether you are spending above your means. You will find that your savings either start dwindling, or that you never seem to have any spare money to put aside into savings. You will find that your debt levels start to creep up, and your credit cards always have hefty balances on them. You may even find yourself applying for finance more often, trying to take out different forms of credit or consolidating debts time and time again. And you may find that you start struggling to make ends meet each month, and start missing repayments on debts or bills.

If you are spending more than you can actually afford to it is time to take action right away, as the longer you leave it the more difficult you will find it to adapt to spending less and the more likely you are to find yourself with serious debt problems. Of course, if you want to continue living the high life and spending frivolously, there are ways to do it – getting a second job for instance. However, relying on finance to fund your overspending is certainly something that you should avoid.

There are a number of ways to cut back on the amount of money that you are spending each month. You will need to cut back on going out and entertainment – try spending a few more nights in with a DVD and a home cooked meal rather than going out for meals or nightclubs. Don’t spend money on clothes and gadgets just to keep up with the Jones’s – limit this type of spending to necessities. You could even invest in a cheap exercise machine – even a second hand one – and cancel that expensive gym membership.

Although we all overspend at one time or another, such as during the festive season, it is important that you don’t get into the habit of living this lifestyle all year round, and if you do find yourself overspending make sure that you address the problem sooner rather than later.
