Wales has lower student debts
September 28, 2007
Student debts in Wales are significantly lower than student debts in England according to recent figures. Many students get themselves into high levels of debt whilst studying, but these recent figures suggest that students in Wales do not have to put themselves in as much debt as those in England. The average annual student debt in England is around £4296, and in Wales the average annual student debt is £3774.
The estimated debt for students that are graduating in Wales comes in at around £11,496, which is over £1500 lower than the estimated debt for those graduating in England.
One industry official involved in student debt surveys stated: “It’s good news for students in Wales - nobody wants higher debts.” Typical student fees are around £3000 per year in England, but are significantly lower at around £1200 per year in Wales.
However, officials state that students in England often get help in terms of grants and bursaries to help with their fees, which helps to decrease the gap between England and Wales student debts.
One official stated: “Although one pays £3,000 in England, there are bursaries and grants to help about half of all students, so I would not expect the £1,800 difference to be slapped on the debt, only a proportion of it.”
He also added: “The advantages of having a degree still vastly outweigh the costs. It doesn’t matter which one you choose, it does matter that it’s right for you. Welsh universities offer all that things that Wales offers. But Bangor, say, offers different things from Swansea.”
Figures also showed that student debt is rising by around 23.5% in the UK as a whole, and by 25.5% in England compared to just 8.8% in Wales.
