Sky may offer stand alone broadband
September 25, 2007
In a recent announcement officials from BSkyB have announced that the media giant is considering launching a stand alone broadband service, although there are not definite plans in place as yet, and officials have reiterated that it is simply a possibility at the moment.
BSkyB already offers a broadband service as part of a bundle package to customers that also take the television service. However, the media giant has enjoyed huge success following the launch of its broadband service, and this is why executives are now looking into the potential for a stand alone service for non television customers.
BSkyB only launched its broadband service for television customers last year, but in that time has managed to become the fastest growing broadband provider in the UK, having signed up close to three quarters of a million customers since it was launched in October of last year. With this type of growth the media giant is able to stand firm against its arch rival Virgin Media as well as against other major broadband providers in the UK.
Officials feel that their existing success could indicate even greater success with the availability of stand alone broadband, making Sky Broadband accessible to many more people and potentially increasing profits, success, and exposure for the company.
Many industry officials have welcomed the idea of stand alone broadband from BSkyB, but have added that in order to remain competitive Sky will have to think carefully about pricing as well as providing good service.
One official stated: “The most important issue will be pricing and the avoidance of any confusion between its pay and non-pay-TV broadband offerings.”
A Sky official stated that the decision was still being made with regards to the possibility of the stand alone service, adding: “We’re now examining options to broaden access to the benefits and value that we can provide. However, no plans are confirmed at this time.”
