Making sure you don’t experience problems with your travel insurance

Over the coming weeks many individuals, couples, groups, and families in the UK will be heading off on their holidays, and many will be sorting out travel insurance cover to protect them whilst they are away from home.

However, experts have highlighted the importance of informing the insurance company of key facts relating to health issues in order to try and avoid a dispute with the insurance company over a claim that you might make.

Recent reports indicate that the leading cause of complaints to the Financial Ombudsman Service relating to travel insurance is non-disclosure of medical information. Experts state that those taking out travel insurance cover should provide details on any health problems that you or members of your family suffer from. This is in case the ill health of a family member makes it impossible for you to travel, and you therefore have to make a claim against your insurance policy.

A spokesman from the Financial Ombudsman Service stated: ‘Tell your insurer everything. Then it’s their responsibility to ask further questions if it thinks it is important. It cannot turn down a claim if it did not ask you the question. If you have any doubts, you could get a print-out of your medical history, or give the insurer permission to get it, from your doctor.’

With regards to the level of complaints that flood in over non-disclosure of medical information the FOS spokesman stated that in two out of three cases the ruling was in favour of the policyholder. He stated: ‘We find many non-disclosure complaints are where the insurer has taken a very cut and dried view. We say it is a spectrum of behaviour ranging from innocent misinformation to fraud and all the shades in between and you have to pull back and look at the bigger picture.’
