Dual fuel may be the more expensive option for many
September 17, 2007
For some years energy customers in the UK have been under the impression that the best way to cut the cost of gas and electricity usage is to opt for dual fuel, where both gas and electricity is taken through the same supplier, with discounts being applied by the supplier for taking both services together as a package.
However, according to a leading price comparison service this is not necessarily the case, and many consumers could actually save themselves more money by taking gas and electricity from different suppliers that offer cheaper usage costs.
According to officials from the price comparison service consumers may be able to save around £20 a year on the cost of their gas and electricity by taking these services from individual suppliers based on how much the supplier charges for energy usage. Officials state that the savings that can be made by doing this could be greater than the savings made by opting for dual fuel and having discounts applied for doing this, even though the overall different each year is not all that much.
One spokesperson for the price comparison service stated: ‘It has been a common misconception that dual fuel is generally cheaper than taking out two separate deals. But our research shows the tables have turned and now Brits everywhere other than South Wales can save money by separating their energy providers.’
Consumers are advised to do a little research and rather than assuming dual fuel will be cheaper to check and see whether individual services from different providers could work out cheaper in the long run, which is often the case according to some experts. However, this could mean increased inconvenience for some consumers, as they will have to deal with two separate energy suppliers.
