Check out your travel insurance before you leave home

Summer is the time when many people travel abroad on vacation and want to protect themselves by taking out travel insurance to protect themselves while they are away from home.
Experts stress that it is extremely important for such policyholders to inform the insurance company of any health-related issues in order to avoid any disputes with the insurance company or any problems that may arise if you do need to make a claim.
The Financial Ombudsman Service reports that many of its complaints about travel insurance deal with the customer not disclosing key medical information that should have been included in the policy. If you or any member of your family does have a medical condition, the details must be provided to the insurance company. This will cover you just in case one member of your family cannot travel due to the illness, in which case you can submit a claim against the travel insurance policy.
According to a representative of the Financial Ombudsman Service ‘Tell your insurer everything. Then it’s their responsibility to ask further questions if it thinks it is important. It cannot turn down a claim if it did not ask you the question. If you have any doubts, you could get a print-out of your medical history, or give the insurer permission to get it, from your doctor.’
The Financial Ombudsman Service says that in the investigation of complaints about non-disclosure of medical information, the ruling came down in favor of the policyholder tow out of three times. He said ‘We find many non-disclosure complaints are where the insurer has taken a very cut and dried view. We say it is a spectrum of behaviour ranging from innocent misinformation to fraud and all the shades in between and you have to pull back and look at the bigger picture.’
